On the morning of July 17, 2015, CIMC Raffles delivered two 50,000-ton semi-submersible vessels to Xinquan Group and ZPMC. After delivery, they will be operated by "Jia Hua Shipping" and will soon head to Batam Island for transportation tasks.
These two sister ships were conceptually designed by Xinquan Group, with basic design completed by Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute, and final assembly and construction by CIMC Raffles. The ships are 216 meters long, 43 meters wide, 13.35 meters deep, with a design draft of 10 meters and a cargo deck submergence depth of 13 meters. They have a design speed of 13.5 knots, are classed by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and are equipped with a DP2 dynamic positioning system, an unmanned engine room, and fully removable pontoons. They can meet the transportation requirements of large offshore oil drilling platforms, large warships, gantry cranes, prefabricated modular components, and other extra-long, heavy, and oversized equipment, and can also perform floating installation and other offshore installation operations. CIMC Raffles has transported 8 offshore platforms globally using this type of semi-submersible vessel.
This type of vessel uses conventional diesel engine propulsion with a single rudder, offering more reliable performance, lower fuel consumption, and easier operation and management compared to other electrically propelled semi-submersible vessels. The detachable pontoons and chimney design allow for more flexible cargo loading and unloading. Equipped with two full-rotating thrusters, in addition to meeting dynamic positioning functions, the vessel also has redundant power capabilities, maintaining a safe speed of no less than 7 knots even if the main engine fails. Both semi-submersible vessels adopt a large-module flat construction and in-dock floating assembly construction process, significantly improving the rate of section outfitting and greatly shortening the dock occupancy period.
The domestic equipment rate of these two vessels reaches 87%, with the main propulsion system using full-rotating thrusters from Wuhan Ship Machinery. CRRC's motors and frequency converters were used for the first time in a marine engineering project. The two semi-submersible vessels completed sea trials in 16 and 13 days respectively, with domestic equipment performing well during the trials.
